Hello Angela, You have to go apply to AAFES on-base to learn the answer to that. The Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) specifies employment of local national civilians. The US guarantees so many jobs to German civilians in part for allowing a US military base to be stationed on their home territory. So, your status as a spouse of an American military man and being a German national yourself has special connotations. You really have to just go to AAFES civilian personnel office and ask that question. Best wishes, Larry Smith Senior Master Sergeant, USAF (Ret.) First Sergeant

Yes you could, that is if they hire you as a "local national." Lately its hard to get in as one since the HRO office prefers American Spouses because they are cheaper. As a German they would have to pay in Euros at a higher hourly salary and give you all the benefits including Medical Insurance. It also depends on the base. Where I am at they just hired 3 Germans because all the soldiers came back from their Deployment and they were hurting on ppl. What you could try is apply for a position in the Food Court first. Cause once your "in" its easier to move around within AAFES, that is if you don't mind working in a Dining Facility, But it helps you make a name for yourself, and its easier to work yourself up as supervisor, and THAT you could use on your application from the HRO, also, the dining facility can write you a letter of recommendation which always looks good on any resume.

English programs in Germany

English programs in Germany?
I currently live and work in Germany as a US citizen on a work visa. A friend of mine who is currently studying computer sciences at the University of Tübingen (also an American citizen) said that they offer an English literary program taught in English. He was not sure on the details of it, and I was unable to find anything on it. Thus, I was wondering if anyone else out there has taken part in it, and if so could they share the details with me. With that, I was wondering the restrictions on a student visa for Germany, such as how much I could work per year while on my student visa. The last thing is that my friend said he got a scholarship of about 700 Euro a month from Baden Wurttemberg. Does anyone know about the scholarship, or does it sound familiar to them?

Your best bet to find out is either the website of the UNI Tübingen or contact them and ask for detailed information. On a student visa you are allowed to work part time usually that means not more than 400 € per month. 700 € are not much money in Baden Württemberg which together with Bavaria is the economical strongest and thus most expensive part of Germany.

Hi, Baden Wurttemberg surely is a rich state and offers quality education along with scholarships. Various German Universities offer English programs and they are really good. Check the program outline since there might be some courses in German too. I have seem Universities offering complete degree program in English language. As per working rights are concerned, on student visa, you can work 90 working days or 180 half working days. Beware of your health insurance limit when working. Check out:

Whoever told you that is waaaay off base.. No such thing. unless you are a citizen of a European Union country, you cannot work in Germany without getting a work visa...and they are nearly impossible to get. See site below. For visa application info, see 2nd site.

There is NO such option as to register online to work in Germany! Since you are an EU citizen the procedure is the following. You move to Germany and there you register with the local authorities for a residency, that is what also every German and every resident has to do nobody is required to register to work. That done you go to the local Arbeitsamt and search for a job or you search the local newspapers etc. Be aware any decent job requires you to speak German. Also be aware for many citizens of EU countries in Eastern Europe ( for example Poland ) there are still restrictions to work in Germany.

Well as a British citizen of course you can work and live in Germany. That's the point of European Union (at least for the older member states...). For doing your own business you have to declare yourself to be a "Selbstständiger" (which means smtg like independent). For this you have to get a special tax-number which allows you to write bills ("Rechnungsnummer"). But to be honest it aint that easy, also for Germans. So dont expect to solve that soon. The best is if you can get a "Steuerberater" (tax consultant) he/she sure can help you with that! but it will cost a Euro or two... All the best and good luck!
