Well as a British citizen of course you can work and live in Germany. That's the point of European Union (at least for the older member states...). For doing your own business you have to declare yourself to be a "Selbstständiger" (which means smtg like independent). For this you have to get a special tax-number which allows you to write bills ("Rechnungsnummer"). But to be honest it aint that easy, also for Germans. So dont expect to solve that soon. The best is if you can get a "Steuerberater" (tax consultant) he/she sure can help you with that! but it will cost a Euro or two... All the best and good luck!
